Why does a phone photo turn the Moon white?
Manage the contrast between a bright Moon and a dark sky by adjusting exposure, focus and stability.
The dark background misleads automatic exposure
A camera may brighten the dark sky and clip the much brighter lunar surface. Digital zoom enlarges limited pixels and shake. Reduce exposure before increasing zoom.
A repeatable sequence
- Stabilize the phone in a safe place.
- Use optical telephoto if available.
- Tap the Moon for focus and lower exposure until surface detail appears.
- Use a timer.
- Compare several exposure settings.
Controls differ by phone. Compare normal photo mode if night mode overexposes the Moon. One ISO or shutter setting is not suitable for every device.
Surface detail and scenery need different choices
Exposing for the lunar surface can leave buildings dark. Twilight can reduce the contrast for landscape compositions. Haze and thin cloud can create halos. Quarter phases may show relief near the terminator, but sensor and lens resolution still limit detail. Computational photography can alter the image; record the mode used.
Keep a comparison record
