Why does the Moon show the same face?

Understand synchronized rotation and the small changes caused by libration.

01

The Moon does rotate

The Moon rotates roughly once per orbit. This keeps the same hemisphere facing Earth. Walking around a person while facing them illustrates how your orientation also turns once.

02

The far side has day and night

The far side is not permanently dark. It is the hemisphere facing away from Earth and experiences daylight and night too. Phase and visible hemisphere are separate concepts.

03

Why the view shifts slightly

Libration makes the disk appear to nod and sway, letting us see slightly more than half the surface over time. A simple phase illustration is not a precision map of that effect.
