Why can we see the Moon by day?

Learn why the Moon can be up in daytime and how contrast changes.

01

The Moon follows its own schedule

Near first quarter the Moon is often visible in the afternoon; near last quarter it is often visible in the morning. These are broad patterns, not exact rise and set times.

02

Bright skies reduce contrast

Moonlight is reflected sunlight. Scattered daylight reduces contrast with the sky. A higher Moon well separated from the Sun can be easier to identify, depending on cloud and haze.

03

Check the direction first

Check altitude and azimuth before looking with the unaided eye. Never sweep binoculars or telescopes near the Sun. AR can be inaccurate and is not a solar safety device.
